ARTIFACT: Indian Scout gear, 1860s

NARRATIVE: In the mid to late 1800s, Indian Scouts provided vital service in military campaigns with their familiarity of the terrain and knowledge of tribal cultures, rivalries and fighting ability.

This drawing started with my fascination with Native Americans and the beauty, wonder and life etched into their faces. I marvel at their artistic choices from the hoop earrings, to the braids, to the bones, feathers and beads they used to adorn and define themselves. Artistically, their use of design and other elements knock me out. This drawing is a tribute to the Native Americans who gave their lives as scouts.
