NARRATIVE: The homes and farms of the West were won not only by the hard labor of working or hunting for their “daily bread," but also by the vigilance of those who protected those earnings from both marauders and wild animals. Often, and especially during the daylight hours, the guardians of the homesteads were the women, old and young, who had to quickly adopt an unconquerable spirit of courage in order to preserve their lives, liberties, and pursuits of happiness.
