Bottled Beaver Musk

John Buxton
Oil, 19" x 24"
$8000

NARRATIVE: Unlike western trade, the eastern frontier trade was controlled by Natives who did not allow settlers, traders or military to trap or harvest game on their sacred hunting grounds. As seen in this painting, Metis people being of mixed blood were allowed to trap beaver or hunt upon Native land. They, in turn, could deal with white traders or Natives. The painting shows them teasing their dog with beaver musk scent in bottles.
